I've seen statements from people that say "don't bother registering a name unless it gets xxxx searches a month" in GAKT, but I'm wondering what numbers people are aiming for. For instance, I came across a handful of names that refer to equipment for a specific sport, which have 2-4 words. I was excited, until I entered the name of the sport in the KT and saw that the first entry has just under 500 monthly searches.

I'll use Hockey as an example (although that's not it). The first term to come up in GAKT is "field hockey shoes," with 450 searches. But searching for the exact term "field hockey ______ gear" in quotes brings up 10,300 results, with a few advertisers in the sidebar using those exact terms. It's 900,000 results without the quotes, but I know that doesn't mean much.

Is this enough search volume? Based on the GAKT information, I would worry that it's too small of a niche with low search volume (although the sport itself is big). But seeing that there are advertisers using this particular term, it might be appealing to an end user, and the name itself is pretty specific in describing the exact products.

So here's the question? What's your benchmark when evaluating search volume? 5,000 monthly searches and up?

I'm trying to avoid regging junk names, so I'm trying to do as much research as possible beforehand.

thanks in advance. :)

Personally, I like >50k...but this is just my personal preference and not based on any set rule that I'm basing on personal selling history.

Wow, ok. Is that 50K in the keywords tool, or G search results (in quotes)?

The ultra-popular keywords with 50,000-100,000 searches in GAKT all seem to be taken. I might be better off just ignoring the first 3 pages of keywords, and focusing on ones a little farther down the list.

Depends on the niche also. I have no problem with keywords that only get 1k searches but get $10-$20 average cpcs. Actually, I often prefer them. Less competition makes it easier to get ranked higher. Better to get 10 $5 clicks than 100 5 cent clicks. Of course, that assumes you will be developing the name. For resale, the higher searched names sell better.

It is according to TLD's I think, if it is .com starting from 1k and more , .net and .org 3k and more, other TLD's I will not register it if less than 20k.
Good luck

Thanks for the link, South. The keyword tool I was using was this one:
http://www.google.com/sktool/#keywords

which is the search-based one, and was yielding different results. The one you posted makes a LOT more sense. Thank you!

Correct, but that result is for broad search. Choose "exact" under "match type" for exact searches.

Cheers!

That link is handy if you want to check a bunch of stuff at once, giving you an idea of what to narrow down after with the keyword tool or wordtracker, or....

I find that the results returned by the Adwords tool can be quite off as I have domain names with 20K exact monthly searches with barely no traffic ranking first page..
