I'm really confused about how to price names with a short "half-life" on eBay (or whether to even bother). I have Kerry-Online.com at $99 with a "Buy it now" of $750 - which seems to be middle-of-the road. Others are pricing at xx,xxx - while mostly the only domains getting bids are priced for a few dollars.

Has anybody had any luck there? How would you value a name like Kerry-Online.com (considering that it is crippled by that hyphen in the middle).

Kerry-Online

Most hyphen domain names are not of worth unless you use them as keywords on search engine's where people just type in book store or pet store or something like that
so unless you find a die hard kerry fan this domain name has a low value. I own a great kerry domain name and listed it for 5000.00 and recived no intrest. Resumited it at a lower price 1500.00 and It is going to end very soon with no sale. I personally don't get it because this domain name is super. I listed it on ppc and recived lot's of clicks. Who know's I wish you luck in your sale.

It will increase in value, or will plummet to worthless in November, so hold on to it until then.

LOL! You naughty, Sharpy. Any presidential candidate related domain WILL "plummet to worthless" then, even when that candidate wins! :D

Seriously though, just try clinton-online.com.

personally i think it would be hard to give it away ... he has johnkerry.com and it's promoted on every ad i've seen, even if it's to be used as a support site there are alot of available names out there that are better.

if you really want to sell it set your reserve at '0' and be happy if you get a couple bids.

agreed - why on earth would you think kerry-online.com has any value whatsoever?

3 questions...
1) is anybody typing it in? (highly unlikely)
2) is it developed with an active user base? (nope)
3) why would someone would pay one cent for this when there are comparably bad domains still available for registration (such as kerrynetwork.com - actually, that may be a little better even)

You won't make money on this, unless you do something about #1 & #2 above. Those are the only ways you could possibly pump any value into this dog.

If anybody feels the need to disagree publicly with me on this, my only response is to request that the seller keep us informed of any sales progress, and what it finally goes for if it does sell. I guarantee I will be vindicated.

I tend to agree with you. I picked it up as an unexpected drop knowing that it was a long shot. I'm not out much money if it expires in a year.

My question has more to do with whether anyone has mastered the art of selling domains on eBay. It seems like most people either price things outrageously or for pennies with little middle ground. Maybe this is the wrong forum for that question.

No, I think you are at the best place to ask the question

And you have nailed it on the head - ebay is a haven for unrealistic dreamers in the area of domains. It is also an excellent place to learn about market values... 99% of the crap out there lands on ebay beofre we see it on the droplists

I think if you put decent domains on ebay, they will find an audience and usually will be bid up to their reasonable market value. But not many serious domainers are really paying too much attention to ebay, so while you have a large audience, it is probably not very high in quality.

The days of finding a sucker to buy a dog are over - ebay or no ebay.
