I caught this domain a year ago and the catching registrar was Livedoor Domain (previously known as Samurai Domain). All well up until the renewal a year later.

I tried to renew a domain and noticed they don't have a secure web form. No https! Where on internet do you see that? I just got my credit card info stollen (still don't know how) and I was always using secure forms and now some registrar wants me to use their insecure form for posting my credit card info? They must be joking!

So a transfer to my favorite registrar came to mind. And what do I read on the Livedoor Domain's site?

"If you wish to change the registrant, SAMURAI DOMAIN requires the application form and personal identification document to be sent by mail.

Please download the application form from here."

How typical. They charge 3550 YPJ ($32) for a year and then want you to fill out papers and send IDs over regular mail out to Japan, which is sure a painful procedure so who's gonna really do it? You eat that $32 kick in the butt and pay (if the payment form was at least secure!)

Not to mention I only have 10 days to renew or transfer which is not enough time to make the transfer over regular mail happen.

So okay, let's read the damn form I need to fill out to even allow transfers (stoneage). I download the PDF file and open it. Error. No font found. WTF?! So I can't even read the damn form.

Okay, let's ask them about it. Searching for contact/support link/email. None found inside my account. So ok, let's check their home page. CRAP! All in Japanese! No link to English language page. No "Contact/support" pages where I could at least pick up some email addresses. Nada.

I am pissed off beyond belief.

Does any of you have any contact info for these schmucks (or any solutions)?

Some good news is that in November a new transfer policy is being put in place by ICANN. This kind of thing will not be allowed under the new policy.

Right, there is a major loophole in the transfer policy. Even if you were to send the mail to Japan likely they will say they never received it as most of the time registrars like this do not allow for a courier type service or receipt when the mail is received.

I cant wait for November though I imagine these registrars will find some other ways to hold domains hostage. I think ICANN needs to closely screen applicants instead of giving everyone with $5k in cash and $100k in the bank a registrar license.

McSpike,

I've got some good news for you! These people react to transfer requests almost immediately. (You will receive a "confirmation" email containing a link to their site and you will be asked to "accept" or "deny." When you "accept" you will get a funny message like "This error occured" or something like that. Don't worry! It's all good!)

Also, that change of registrant that you mentioned is not something that you have to worry about. You are NOT changing the registrant, you are changing the registrar!

hmm that's good news, but problems continue with 2 other registrars.

ar.com (Alice's Registry) - I paid for renewal and all I got from them was a note that they will email me when the renewal takes place. WTF? Do they add it to a To Do list and process it manually? 24 hours passed and my domain hasn't been renewed yet. I sent them 2 emails and got no response. This domain is expiring today. God if they let it expire after I paid for renewal... After I paid I didn't get any confirmation or recepit to my email either. Pisses me off.

signdomains.com - I tried to renew a domain and all goes well till I hit the credit card info page. Well I don't even hit it - it's 404! WTF? You want to pay for a domain and their payment page is 404? I sent them 2 emails. Got no response. Domain is expiring on Saturday. If I get no response by tomorrow it will expire. Just because their billing and support are fuc-d up?

Don't think you'll have problems here either because most registrars hold the domain(s) for an additional 30-40 days past the expiration date whereby you will still be able to renew without penalties. But stargate.com does not; the day after the expiration date the domain will be placed into "redemption."

it would take them only one simple reply "We are working on the problem..." to calm me down. I got nothing.

Now compare that to my favorite registrar which has LIVE support! LIVE! They helped me 1 on 1 a few times and THAT'S something you call good support.

directnic.com

and btw, those 2 registrars didn't answer.

signdomains.com keept rejecting my usernam/password when I tried to get to their support ticket system. so I said maybe they ****ed up something. I'll create a new account and they will have fresh info. ok. I create, I login to members area, it works. ok, lets' try support ticketing. I try to login, I get a script error. here comes the stupid part. they say if I don't understand the error or have problems to write to their support. yaha! It doesn't work you morons! So you can't get to their support. Their billing and sales emails don't bother replying.
Looks like they took a dive.

What happens with domains when a registrar goes under? I'll make a new post about that.

i was almost in the same situation. they caught a domain for me a few months ago (4 namewinner.) and i was afraid i'll have the same problem. but it turns out they were easy & fast. as soon as two months were up i send them an email asking 2 transfer my domain, and they replied the day after with a link to confirm it.

all in all it took 2-3 days to do it. not bad at all.

Anyone who pays a drop catching service above registration price to garner a name, and then fails to transfer at 60 days is asking for trouble. Why you would do the research to find the name you want, then try to snipe it, then put it into a sales or traffic program, only to loose it a year later by leaving the renewal until the 11th hour is just beyond me.

you had to send Livedoor an email? didn't you apply for the transfer at your registrar which then innitiated the transfer request with Livedoor? I thought that is the process when transfering domains.

I agree with that. Only it was my first year catching these domains so I didn't know what to expect. I was a bit afraid of this and now I am sorry I didn't transfer them before.

heh, at the end of the article you can read:
Q: How far are you going to take Livedoor from here?
A: To be the world's number 1. I'm going to make us the best in the world.

mhahaha... He can't even put up a SSL for credit card billing and thinking of becoming a world's #1.

Anyway I got an email from them too, confirming the transfer. Looks like I won't have to use that insecure payment page after all :)

Ar.com never responded, but the internic's whois now shows a new expiry date. so they did silently renew my domain and left me in doubts. Their whois also always timeuted. Dunno how internic then got the info.

Signdomains.com replied after 4 days and send me to a different payment page wher I had to pay in indian rupies and the invoice didn't state how much rupies is $9.5 dollars. So I had to convert that myself and send them some amount in rupies that was little above that. The return page errored, khaha. Then later I got a confirmation of the renewal.

See we wouldn't have to go through all this pain if they responded to my emails (or responded in a timely manner). That's why I am gonna transfer domains from them all.

Half the fun is trying to grab the name away from the registrar who landed the name. But it is generally good practise to transfer immediately the 60 days are up, since it might take about half a year to get the name out... LOL
