From wired.com,

"The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday approved an effort to create a kid-friendly Internet zone free of violence, pornography and other adult material.....Websites bearing a dot-kids.us address would have to certify that they do not contain sexually explicit material, hate speech, violence or other material not suitable for minors.

No surprise really.

The pity is its not a gtld - but that would be extremely hard to work given different laws in different countries.

Oh, and the fact ICANN didn't like the application for it (but then again, it wasn't from one of their "buddy" registrars).
