Just got this from NameWinner today. I can assure you I won't be using NameWinner anymore to save me time for those little domains I want. Enom will get that business now. NameWinner's charm was that I could get a domain no one else wanted for only $8.75. I won't pay $40 for that same domain.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Dear NameWinner customer,

------------------------------------------------------------
*** IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING NEW STARTING BID PRICING ***
------------------------------------------------------------

Since launching in August 2001, NameWinner has grown to become one of the largest and most successful expiring domain name sites on the Internet. With a unique auction model and high-powered domain grabbing technology, we've been able to successfully register thousands of valuable domain names for you the instant they became available again for registration.

In order for NameWinner to continue this success in a very competitive environment, it has become necessary for us to raise our starting bid pricing. We have avoided raising our prices for a long time (and in fact have lowered prices over the years), but the nature of the secondary market requires that we continually update our technology and add new partners to help us grab these high-value domain names to remain competitive.

Beginning Friday, May 28th, starting bids will be $40.00. Current NameWinner customers will be grandfathered in to this new pricing structure at $30.00. Everything else about the NameWinner auction model will remain unchanged.

NameWinner owes much of its success to loyal customers like you. Our goal is to continue being the leader in the secondary domain name market, consistently grabbing great expiring domain names for you every day.

Please visit NameWinner in the coming days for more information on the new pricing structure. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us by visiting http://www.namewinner.com/help.php.

Definitely great news for low budget domainers huh? Guess this will increase GoDaddy backorders.

great - now we won't have to pay 4-5 times as much to lose the same domains we want.

when is the last time they actually caught anything of value anyway?

Current customers will pay $30 instead of $40, only a little over a 300% increase. That's about 100 times the rate of inflation!

It's a sad day. I bought hundreds of domains for $8.75 there and made some nice profits. Costs just keep spiralling upward in this business. Guess that moves me one step closer to spending more time devloping than chasing names.

so what about all the names we have in our account that are at 8.75 right now? Those will all get pushed up to $30? If thats the case then they can forget it..they better honor the names we have in our account that are under $30 now otherwise its false advertising.

Exactly, if they auto bump the hudnreds of names i have in there that are at 8.75 to $30, without letting you clear your account that would be illegal i think. Either way I'll just put the acc on my dead credit card :)

I assume they can't increase a bid of $8.75 to $30. That would seem very wrong.

I have bid $8.75 on many names, only wanting to pay that much, or maybe a few dollars more. I would be outraged if they were to charge me $30 for any of those names.

When enom increased the minimum "bid" by $2 recently, if I remember correctly, names which were added before the cutoff date and didn't have a a $2 subsequently added, were effectively not on the list.

edit: Please read "2 points" for "$2"!

It is only logical that they would raise the min. bid.

It takes just as much effort to catch a $ 8. bid as a $ 100. bid.

And, since they have to pay Verisign $ 6.00. Which one would you
want to catch? The bid with a $ 2.75 profit margin. Or, the $ 94.
profit margin.

I speculate within 30 days, Enom will change "something" with their drop program.

This is nothing different then what happens everyday in other industries.

You just need to work smarter.

hhhmm not the same effort if they are smart.
They have 15+ registrars. They can use 1 registrar for all the $8.75 bids or put a weight on each domain.

I'm not at all surprised that they raised the cost - the $8.75 was one of the greatest bargains in the business - I'm just sad they're strangling just about the last golden goose for domainers! :-D

But, if they put more effort into catching the higher priced ones
then they can make more profit. I realize that sounds like a dirty
word. But, isn't that what all of us are trying to do.

Maximize our financial return on our investments.

A year ago, they use to catch many of the higher priced domains.
Now, Pool is taking the "cream". And, leaving the cheaper/unprofitable ones
for NW.

This indicates that NW wants to get back into the game.

This is bull sh*t. I can't believe the 8.75 account holders did not receive communication of the upcoming change. I am one of those. Time to raise hell!

Did you understand what I said?
5% more effort that what they put now will not get them the best names.

Catching the $8.75 is not what brought namewinner in this situation.

Pool has far more registrars and I guess better software.

The only reason I see for this decision is minimize the cost of handling all those $8.75 names which are too many!

Yes, I understand what you are trying to say.

But, why should they put any effort into an unprofitable transaction?

I will miss the $ 8.75 bargain.
