For Sale Registrar Registers an Expiring Name

A while ago I inquired about a higher profile name that was expiring in 6 months. The original company's contact info was no longer valid so I was forced to contact the tech contact - which was the registrar. The registrar said they were in contact with the owners of the name (yeah right)... so we carried out negotiations. We could not come to a price at that time so we broke off negotiations.

Now, the registrar has taken full ownership of the name from the previous owner! They renewed, and put it into their name!

Is this allowed? Does it make a difference if its an opensrs registrar/affiliate (or whatever you call them!)?

If it's an OpenSRS reseller, read their terms and conditions - some allow this in their contract. If not, complain to OpenSRS/Tucows - their compliance dept is pretty hardcore.

Names4ever has renewed the .net/.org which I chose not to keep when I moved the .com somewhere else. Been renewed now for like 2-3 yrs. Probably just a glitch in their system.
