check this out... i host with a company that offers the following deal...

Duron 1.3 GHz CPU
* 512MB RAM
* 60GB HD 7200RPM
* Web ControlPanel
* 15GB (48kbps) AVERAGE bandwidth per day (about 450GB total bandwidth per month)
* Windows 2000 Advanced Server or RedHat Linux 7.1
$98/month

IMPORTANT NOTE: We charge the bandwidth based on the AVERAGE usage in a month, NOT the TOTAL usage like most other companies do. So you can be sure that you're getting a lot more bandwidth for the money with us. GUARANTEE!! And we do NOT charge taxes like some other companies do. All servers are connected to our network at 10/100 Mbps connection.

now bearing this in mind I used less than 300gb total last month from a fairly even stream of data and i just received an invoice kindly letting me know my credit card was just billed for $600 for a bandwidht overage (this is the first i have heard of this overage)...

does anyone know about this kind of thing as i DESPERATELY need to make sense of this as i think they are trying to scam me...

the details of the server mentioned are found here

and the terms and conditions i agreed to are here

I am on a dedicated server package so i cant see where it says i will be charged this much for any overages...

it does mention extra data charges in the extras found here

but from these charges i would have to have required 4 lots of data equating to 61gb extra PER DAY how is this possible when my data requirements only equal 300gb per month...

this is very worrying for me as $600 is beyond my monetary means so has put me into financial problems so if you know anything about this PLEASE have a look at how this may have happened.

many thanks

Unless I'm missing something--they have made a big mistake Ciq.

You are on the "Special Server" package right?

It states very clearly... "450GB total bandwidth per month" ... and you didn't even use that much.

It's like they are charging you as if you were on a "Server I" package or something smaller--where you get a lot less bandwidth. This has to be a mistake.

Have you contacted them yet? or were you trying to get some feedback here before you did?

$600 - sounds like a scam!

You can post this on WHT, might get a better support responce if worded a bit nicer? also contact, sales, billing or anyome else who'll anser - that's $600 and you can even do a charge back.

And why not try RackShack - not my favorite by any means, but their bandwidth is firm at 400 Geg

4webspace.com is pretty good too (I'd be torn between them and RackShack.net if I was looking for a new server; I already have one at 4webspace).

Look at this clause

In the unlikely event that you find an identical hosting plan advertised with a lower price, now or for as long as you host your site with us, we will match the price and give you a credit for 10% of the difference on the monthly fee for as long as you host the site with us. This way, you can be sure that you will always get the BEST DEAL out there.

Point this out to them, Find a good deal advertised somewhere else (Racksale?) and claim your 10%. If they won't pay - try for a chargeback, but move your domain first (You have got your name registered with someone else haven't you?)

heres their explanation...
You present fiascosystems.net server is Special server that comes with
15GB (48kbps) AVERAGE bandwidth per day (about 450GB total bandwidth per
month).

kbps is kilo bit per second
GB is Giga Byte

48kbps is equal 15GB. That is daily average bandwidth. The total
bandwidth per month will be 450GB. Below is the explantion in math
equation.

Daily Average = 48 kbps = Average 48 kbps
---------------
day

And let's convert 48 kbps to GBpm:

48 kilo bit 1 Mega 1 Giga 1 byte 60 sec 60 minute
----------- X ------ X --------- X ------ X --------- X ----------- X

sec 1000 k 1000 Mega 8 bit 1 minute 1 hour

24 hour 30 day 15.552 GB
------- X -------- = ----------
1 day 1 month month

And since we still have that "per day" value from the above Daily
Average, so the above bandwidth should actually be:

15.552 GB per month
-------------------
day

So the total bandwidth in a month is equal to:

15.552 GB per month 30 days
------------------- X ------- = 466.56 GB
day month

As you can see, 466.56 GB is the total bandwidth, NOT per month, NOT per
day, it is the total value in a month or 30 days

------Your usage-----
You were using average daily bandwidth 675.8kbps(In) + 96.2kbps (OUT) =
772kbps.

where Daily Average = 772 kbps = Average 772 kbps
---------------
day

And let's convert 48 kbps to GBpm:

772 kilo bit 1 Mega 1 Giga 1 byte 60 sec 60 minute
----------- X ------ X --------- X ------ X --------- X ----------- X

sec 1000 k 1000 Mega 8 bit 1 minute 1 hour

24 hour 30 day 250.128 GB
------- X -------- = ----------
1 day 1 month month

And since we still have that "per day" value from the above Daily
Average, so the above bandwidth should actually be:

250.128 GB per month
-------------------
day

So the total bandwidth in a month is equal to:

250.128 GB per month 30 days
------------------- X ------- = 7503.84 GB
day month

As you can see, 7503.84 GB is the total bandwidth, NOT per month, NOT
per day, it is the total value in a month or 30 days

That comes to 675.8kbps(In) + 96.2kbps (OUT)- 48 kbps = Extra 724 kbps
average daily bandwidth.
Or extra total bandwidth usage in a month is 7503.84GB - 466.56 GB =
extra 7037.28GB

Higher levels of data transfer limits are available in 61Gb (192kbps)
AVERAGE per DAY (about 1830GB total bandwidth per month) increments for
$150 per month. Bandwidth is only sold in 61Gb (192kbps) AVERAGE per DAY
(about 1830GB total bandwidth per month) increments and is not prorated
in any manner.

With your extra 724kbps average daily bandwidth, there is 4 * 192kbps
extra bandwidth increment. That is 4 * $150/month which is $600.
......................personally I feel like i have been given the big SHAFT (can you dig it?... :)... but this isnt funny so i shouldnt be laughing :( )

does anyone have a mathematical brain? this is nonsense to me...

i still fail to see how this is my daily average yet i havent used anywhere near this amount in a month... surely if this was the average it would mean i used this much every day so my bandwidth graphs would obviously reflect that... i'm still sure that my bandwidth usage was <300gb

HELP :(

can't read the math either - but the $600 is clear enough. do a search on www.WebHostingTalk.com and see if there are other victims.

RackShack sent me a bill once for $4,000 bandwidth but they had the curtesy to warn me a week before that it was a bug in their systems - that's heart attack material!

Thats just ridiculous. Chargeback and change hosts. Their math might be correct, but all the calculations are bullshit and DO NOT show you the # of GB you transferred. They are trying to bill you for something else completely. NEVER PAY UNDER $200 for a dedicated server.

I know prez I know...

In the end i had to take it, my credit card company gave me hassle about cancelling the charge so i have a hefty $600 lump sitting on it right now... :(

The bad news is i might have the same type of bill for this month... even bigger :(

I moved to a new rackshack server now and so far so good...:)

When looking for dedicated servers, check out http://www.inetu.net/

We've been with them over 3 years and they have outstanding service and support; and we haven't had any billing problems in all of that time.

We presently have 4 fairly hefty machines there.

No, they're not the cheapest, but very close to, if not, the best (IMHO).

Wait a minute.

You said this is what you signed up for

Duron 1.3 GHz CPU
* 512MB RAM
* 60GB HD 7200RPM
* Web ControlPanel
* 15GB (48kbps) AVERAGE bandwidth per day (about 450GB total bandwidth per month)
* Windows 2000 Advanced Server or RedHat Linux 7.1
$98/month

And you use over 300GB of data transfer. Thats a big diference? So that company had every right to bill you for the extra bandwith. Bandwith insn't free?

they state 15gb PER DAY...

but anyways this is all the past... someone's been trawling the archives havent they ;)

Cig, it's a scam. their math makes you confused. the calculation is not correct. the math makes even a genius confused.

nobody uses 48kbps as a bandwidth. the KBPS uses only with speed, not bandwidth. it's totally different thing. no web hosting in the world calculate the bandwidth this way.

moreover, 300GB per month is a lot. i used to have 250,000 visitors per month, but used only 30GB monthly.

scam scam scam. !!!

PS: Was that the mail that I forwarded back to you?
