Just found out USA Today quoted DNJournal.com in a new Tech section story published this week:

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2004-06-29-domain-names_x.htm

We've gotten quite a bit of mainstream media attention this year, starting with the New York Times, followed by the Arizona Republic last weekend and now USA Today. The best thing about the USA Today story is they included a hotlink to our site (something the NY Times and Republic did not do). That will bring in a lot of new readers. :)

Some nice press Duke - well done. One of my old sites was featured in USA Today, too. Boy, did that boost my revenues and visitor count. Keep up the good work!

Congratulations. That is a great accomplishment.

One day, I can tell my grandkids that I knew the famous Ron Hearst (Duke) Jackson on
his way up.

Seriously, that is very impressive.

I hate to mention this right now. But, I haven't gotten my royalty check for my picture
on your website.

I am very proud of that picture. That was taken on one of my good days.

Congrats duke but quick question, how do you know when someone publishes an article about you or include your link. Do they notify you?

In some cases, the reporter who does the story will let you know when it has been published. Many other times I find out when a reader sees it and lets me know. That was the case here. My good friend Howard Hoffman (HioSilver) came cross the story and let me know about it. Larger companies that are in the press all of the time hire clipping services to monitor media around the world. Those services forward all press mentions to the company so they will know what is being said about them. I am a long way from needing a clipping service though! :)

The other people from the industry quoted in the story were the founder of GoDaddy and the CEO of Network Solutions. I think they should make these other guys pay their dues before they get to be mentioned in the same article as me. :-D

From my experience: usually not. I used to work as the editor-in-chief of a large (but now defunct) online technology magazine. I had to gather intelligence about the magazines/newspapers we were featured in through our visitors - only once of twice did a reporter contact me to mention us being featured.

Obviously, being featured in Online editions of newspapers is easy to pick up through the referrer logs :)

Congratulations from me too! I wish you even more luck and success in the future (can never have enough of it, can you? ;-))! Just go on with your good work.

Yes, that's a great service, but not very cheap. I once worked in such a company.

You go Duke. Great to see your hard work and dedication paying off. Now if we can just continue to increase the awareness of .US, that would be great!

This article will be a big step in that direction. Thousands of USA Today readers who didn't know .us .info and .biz were available options know it now!

Congrats Dukey :)

You worked your tail off on that site, and you sure deserve the publicity.

DNJournal is bookmarked as my place for domain news!!

The King of Domain News said:
There is plenty of room for growth, says Ron Jackson, editor and publisher of Domain Name Journal (www.dnjournal.com), in the newer extensions such as .info, .biz and .us. And the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers is considering adding up to 10 more, including .jobs and .travel, by the end of the year.

heheh

good idea with the info/biz/us comment.

it raises awareness.

The way the paragraph was written it sounds like I was the one who made the observation about ICANN considering adding up to 10 more extensions. The writer added that. I actually hope they don't add any for a few years. .Info .Biz and .US have added a lot of new real estate to the web and they should be given a chance to grow and mature before a new outer ring of development begins. New extensions are inevitable as millions of people and businesses come online, but to give each one a fighting chance, ICANN needs to take a very deliberate approach when eyeing further expansion.

I totally agree. And, Duke is "right on the money".

From a strategic marketing position, you don't want a new TLD to
just flounder. You want it to become widely used and become part of
the mainstream, globally.

I understand the new extensions are sponsored tlds, or sTLDs like .aero and .coop introduced in the last round.

Thank you for the $ 0.02 paypal payment.

Once, the site reaches 50,000 on Alexa. I plan to sell the chair on Ebay.

Hey Richard - I would bid on that chair and keep the picture the same (you be lookin hot) - I think Duke will hit the 50K on Alexa soon with all this added PR - He better beef up the server just to be ready for the traffic to come - Great help to all of us in the industry again - I had this article sent to me by 2 domain clients so far that read in at USATODAY, just to make sure I had seen it and I saw one of them started adding new ext. domains to their sub account last night. The power of the media.
