What are pages and hits?

It's Mrs Newbie again, I'm afraid, with another possibly silly question.
I've got my first mini-site up with HostGator and I find I'm unsure of the meaning of some of the statistics. A visit is presumably when someone comes onto the site and a unique visit when they do so the first time (as on Sedo), but what are pages and what are hits?
