Maybe he used to own the domain and forgot to renew. I register linked (previously owned) domains and get at least 1 of these types of emails each week. I really enjoy the "I'm going to sue you" voice mails I get at home.

My starting price usually rises to the level of their anger:razz:

a follow up from this guy

Sir, I don't enjoy the chit-chat. Please provide an address where I may
communicate and prove my rightful ownership and we can clear this up.
Trust me I own the business and retain right to the domain.
I will not be paying you anything.

I don't save the messages, but maybe I'll start - they are pretty funny. Here are a few quotes that I remember:

"my lawyer advises that you should not sell any of your assets, as they will be mine after the lawsuit" (Sold for $500)

"I'm gonna kick your ass before I give you a dime" (Made him come to my home with the cash $250 - (local guy) was scared to death when he realized he was giving up 12" in height and about 100lbs)

"I am losing $50,000 each day because of your theft - and you are going to reimburse me" (A 10 hit a day crafts site - $250)

On the flip side, I have had some very nice folks call me and explain how they lost their domain. I sell those for between $40 and $150 depending on the name and how much effort I have invested.

Moral of the story - be nice
:D

I always list my correct info in the whois, so I would just tell the guy to forward whatever paperwork he has to your address and you will have your attorney review it.

I have found that people with a legitimate case will tend to know what they are talking about and make reference to their actual trademark, applicable laws, and UDRP procedures in the email. You should know by hanging out in this forum how legit their actual claim is.

Sounds like an idiot that probably thinks the name is his, but doesn't have a clue.

No sooner do we talk about this situation and I get this email:

****************************
I a few comments...

I know... what you did with my xxxxxxxx.com was perfectly legal, but I honestly
believe, as do the hundreds of users my web and mailinglists have, that your way of
doing buisness is just the worse kind...

I paid the renoval of my domain, xxxxxxxx.com, twice actually, but something went
wrong and the payment was rejectet. And there were you.... faster than I am, and you
went and bought my domain and know you offer it at the lowest bit.

I know... what you have done is legal, but to say on your web that "We specialize in
the recovery and sale of previously owned domains" is just no the whole truth, what
you do is just not fair nor is it a proper way of doing buisness, you did not
recover xxxxxxx.com you snapped it out of my hands being faster than I am.

It took me 5 years of hard work to create a non comercial website offering
information to xxxxx lovers... it took me 5 years of hard work to get a lot of users
and to build a good online comunity of xxxxxxx with hundreds of hits and
thousands of pageviews every day. Now my xxxxxxx will be back in a day or two as
xxxxxxx.net but you really have done a lot of harm to my site

Do not forget... you took a non comercial web site, I never earned one cent
maintaining it, and turned it in to a filthy buisness.

¿Do you sleep well at night making a benefit of what other people create and work
hard for and never see a cent?

And no... do not tell me to make and offer. And yes... I will warn others of your
nasty way of doing buisness.. it will be on the frontpage of my web when it is back
just as it will be on most of the other webs colaborating with xxxxxxx. It may
not hurt you but at least it will be seen by thousands of people every day.

**********************************************

Now he and his friends are spamming me with numerous phony offers of $0. I have half a mind to redirect it to a porn site.

- Report the harassing SPAM to his/their respective ISP(s)

- Remind him that he can be sued for liable

- Raise the price to $10k

- Redirect the site to a popup hell PORN site.

- Tell him that if he continues to send harassing emails you will report his actions to the local, state and federal authorities.

I can certainly understand someone being upset at losing their domain, but that still doesn't make a valid point. Should nobody register any name that drops? Maybe someone else wants it?

Should I leave the last box of crackers on the grocery shelf in case someone else was planning on coming back for them?

As I stated earlier. I am extremely reasonable when someone approaches me about getting a name back. I would much rather sell it back to someone that can use it best than sell it to somebody else. Fewer than 1 in 100 names I register does the previous registrant actually want the name back. Most are just abandoned - I can't tell which domains fall into the 1% before I reg them.

This is a pretty high traffic name, and if I didn't get it, Ultsearch or someone else would have.

He has a point though, 2ga....

Well that's tuff sh*t for him! Ever heard of the free market? I've had a competing domain reg bet me by a second. Did I send harassing emails to the guy that beat me?…NO F*CKING WAY! I moved on and found another domain to reg that met my criteria. If this guy wants the domain then he should make an offer.
