Will it still expire?

I wonder if anyone could help me out here; regarding the 'On Hold' or 'Expiring Soon' lists on Local Whois or Domainsbot. Upon checking the whois info of names on the lists, I have noticed that some names listed as expired still have plenty of time before they expire (according to the ‘Registrar Info’). One of many examples (of which I do not have the snap): ********.com [Thought I had better censor it, in case the publication offends the owner of the snap]:

Record expires on 16-Aug-2003.
Record created on 15-Aug-1996.

What’s it all about? (!) Do these name still get deleted before the "Record expires" date? If so... why?
There are a couple of names that I would like to snap up affected in this way, but reluctant to spend the 'sponds' for this very reason.

Owner renewed after it expired but before it was deleted from the records.

Cheers Zoobar, that would certainly explain what has happened to that specific name; but many other names with future expiry dates also listed, another example (that I don't want to reveal):

Record created on 2002-04-23 02:36:17.0
Record expires on 2003-04-23 02:36:17.0

And this name has been added to the 'On-Hold' lists recently.

If the name was with Network Solutions it could be in the register for any number of days. They have no standard for deleting.

I would be suspicious of any NSI name being renewed more than 45 days after expiry if the name is a "Gem Name". If your keen on the name you may want to continue monitoring the WHOIS info to see if ownership changes hands.

Check this for a weird example (not of what I was previously talking about, but strange whois goings on!):

I was monitoring Galleries.org, a name that was all set to be deleted; this is a Snapnames alert from around a week ago (Old values first):

Figure that one out! It appears to be a ridiculously late renewal ~ expired since 05-Oct-1999, and suddenly renewed and then sold!

I haven't been playing the 'drop game' for very long at all, & got into it only after one name ~ the .com version of my .co.uk site. The name in question actually expired in Feb 2001, and via Snap Alerts I have seen constant changes in Whois registration data, different registrant names, the name being removed from the root name servers & then added back to the name servers; repeatedly. Overall constant activity, I don't really know what I am looking at to tell you the truth ~ but it doesn't seem right. In my short exposure to the world of expiring domain, including the galleries.org example above ~ I've certainly come to the conclusion that were not playing on a level playing field!
