I had the snap and the high Namewinner bid for dvdpromotions.com.

At the last minute, somebody sniped me at NW (anyone here?), and by the time I got the notification, it was too late to re-bid

So I strolled on in to Pool.com, got myself an account, put in my request, and within an hour I had won the domain.

Go Pool!

You sure you are the only bidder at pool?

I got two e-mails - one titled "Congratulations! You have won domain(s)!" with a similar message in the body, and the other one with account info for the domain at the registrar that landed it.

I'm pretty sure it's mine!

You get sniped at POOL auction as well.

I had been after cybercity.net for months, and had a snap on it, then POOL got it, put it to an auction, and I was the green one until the last minute before the auction closed. I was watching closely at the moment, but it's too late to rebid. I couldn't sleep that night.

Moral of the story: When the auction is nearing end, BID YOUR MAX. That is the purpose of a proxy.

If you would pay $6000 for a name, then why let your bid stay at $400 in the last 5 minutes? Bid the $6000!

Is the highest bidder allowed to bid against himself? I never tried, I kept refreshing the auction page, but it didn't update the change until it's too late.

Why bid against yourself? Every bid is a proxy bid.

Is that right? Once I tried to raise my bid at NW and was told I couldn't bid againt myself! Guess I got misled ever since.

Absolutely. Always proxy to $100,000 for the names you really want.

Would you really do that and trust NW (with their history of phantom bidders) to not claim someone else pushed your bid to the maximum? I sure wouldn't. Since there is no transparency to any of these auctions and you have no idea who is bidding against you (or if any one really is at all), I would think twice about putting in a proxy bid that was far above the value of the name.

A wise precaution, I think

Interesting.

LOL, a $200 would be quite enough for cybercity.net.

And I believe Duke is right, who knows who were bidding against us?
