Several years ago I made a profit of £5000 (UK pounds) over about an 18 month period betting on football (soccer). Won't bore anyone with the details but I did record lots of match results in a database to try and give me another edge in the picks. I also already have excellent knowledge in general about football clubs and history. However I stopped it after having one really poor night where I lost what would have been a winning bet 90% of the time and then chased the loss. Which proved I couldn't stop emotion getting in the way. It also made me realise how time consuming it was keeping the database up to date and selecting the bets across many leagues and competitions. Also my final balance sheet was quite scary as it showed wins totalling something like £106k versus losses totalling £101k. Which seems a heck of a lot of money for betting just to end up with a profit return of £5000 in 18 months.

Have never returned to my original methodology but recently have returned with a much less time consuming approach and only experimenting with very small stakes to see if I can prove any worthwhile profit over a sustained period. So far it's just over break oven. Will continue it into the next football season but if I can't get to a more worthwhile profit margin to justify moving to higher stakes being worthwhile, I'll just quit again.

Have quite similar experience .. just smaller amounts .. and never wish to return there
