Why are unregistered (premium) domains so expensive and who owns them?

Hi

if, they are unregistered, then the registry/registrar, is the registrant.

new extension registries, can "hold" certain keyword domains, and just charge more (premium price) than other less desirable terms in same extension.
however, some label them as premium, when in fact, the term in that particular extension, may decide if it's premium or not.

imo....

Wouldn't that be something like a conflict of interest?

Why do you think it is a conflict of interest creating a reserved list?
I dont know the exact number, but I believe some registries have 100k´s of reserved/premium names.
If I am not mistaken DotTravel started this even before we had the Ngtlds, and DotMobi gave Domains to Sedo for an Action when they started. I remember this because I bought a mobi for 100k or so, shame on me.

You no longer can create unregistered domains with popular keywords because they are classified as premium.

Hoarding the good ones from the public.Picking winners and losers when that should be decided by the market.

To me registrar is equivalent to a government agency.

Uff, thats maybe a little bit hard.
do you mean this in a positive or negative way?
I'm not saying that the government is good or bad.Registrars have different responsibilities.

ICANN is the government.

Registrars are businesses - which is different
Yes.Registrars should compete with each other for business. Domainers are the customers.

Maybe I'm not understanding what you meant by reserve when it comes to domains.
And what are we doing different? ;)

I clearly understand what your saying and I don't agree with it.

It was a metaphorical comparisons to the original post
Hi

i could see that.

because ICANN is "overseer" of the registrars, and they are the governing body that controls accreditation.

imo...
