it will be optional initially, and then mandatory eventually for adult sites based in the u.s. imo

That's going to be a technical, legal, and administrative nightmare some might
prefer to suffer while asleep rather than awake and dealing with it. :-D

.xxx itself from a technical aspsect isn't a big deal, but how .xxx will be used to restrict content is :(

Some possible scenerios...

* Adult affiliate programs, content producers, etc may require webmasters to only utilize .xxx domains.

* The U.S. FCC and other regulatory agencies world-wide will likely latch on .xxx as a way of expanding "indecency" laws, similar to those that already exist in the broadcast media, to the internet (and in a weird twist, to cable as well since many folks get internet via cable); introduction of other restrictive TLDs, such as .KIDS, .ADULT, .TEEN, .FAMILY, etc.

* Liability issues for websites outside .XXX which contain adult oriented content ... recall the U.S. federal law which was passed awhile back regarding fooling children into visiting adult oriented sites with deceptive domain names ... well, that law could likely soon apply to most all .COM sites, since the mere use of .COM itself instead of .XXX could possibly be construed as deceptive in a post-.xxx world.

I'm surprised how quickly .XXX arose from the "dead" ... these are changing times indeed :(

I went to the .xxx presentation at Domain Roundtable in Seattle. It was excellent. The people behind this have a lot of good ideas.

My daughter is named Stephanie. I regret that when anyone goes to Stephanie.com, they find a porn site. Now, the owner can move over to Stephanie.xxx, and sell Stephanie.com in a few years after his traffic has migrated over.

What I liked especially about the .xxx proposal is how they plan on handing initial distribution of the premium keyword domains. Initially, the top, most obvious 100 to 200 domains will be reserved. Then, they will be seeking written proposals which will need to include a cash bid plus plans for marketing .xxx as a brand. The registry will take the big domain cash and use it to market the .xxx brand.

.xxx will not allow child pornography, since it is illegal most places.

this is all well and good, but how will they handle the professional photographer site that specializes in naked elegance, the site dedicated to teaching anatomy or the art site that sells nude scuptures... will they force them to a .xxx domain? and who will determine what's artistic expression and what's deemed pornography?

i really don't have any vested interest here, and don't visit porn sites, but i just foresee alot of 'freedom of speech'/'spirit of the internet' issues

The whole .xxx thing is bullshit i am sorry, sites have disclaimers on them now and parents can use controls set by their ISP providers to help block out porn, just like libraries and schools do now, all this is doing is helping to turn the internet into a virtual police state just like they are doing in america, and they all have $$$$$ in their eyes, just like when the .tv domains came out and you could buy the good ones for big bucks since the registry was more concerned with making cash than letting everyone have a fair shot to get ANY name, this is why the BIG fish will always stay big and the little fish will always get crumbs..its total BULLSHIT and I hope .xxx rots in hell along with all their new owners, but since I need cash too I registered all the important domains about registering them! lol :) I need a bong hit.

Chris

example: RegisterXXXDomain.com
RegXXX.com

and all the others! yipeeeeeee

This is very good news to all new namepace owners. The true value of the .XXX extension will be to generate a giant ripple of awareness and understanding and appreciation of other subject specific extensions beyond .COM, as lobbyists and the media report this.

This time, the empire stricks back.

Notes:

NEWS

The online porn industry is about to enter a domain buying frenzy, as the .xxx domain has been approved. Final details still have to be decided, but the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that the domain will become available probably before the end of this year. Prices for the new domains are likely to be US$75, with no restrictions applied for usage other than measures taken to protect against child pornography.

Two non-profit organizations look likely to oversee the management of the new domain set. The ICM Registry will be tasked with keeping track of the database and overall technical dealings, while the International Foundation for Online Responsibility (IFOR) will focus on defining the rules governing the domain. The IFOR will be made up of a group of people spanning a number of areas, including child advocacy, free expression aficionados, and representatives of the adult entertainment industry.

An attempt was made to approve the .xxx domain back in 2000, but was rejected by ICANN. The rejection was met with anger from some politicians who wanted it in place as a safeguard to children. Now that the domain has been approved, concerns are being expressed over organizations being forced to use it for sensitive topics. The American Civil Liberties Union, for example, is worried that subjects outside of pornography, such as homosexuality and birth control, might be forced to use a .xxx domain, meaning they could be blocked from people who need help or support in those areas.

I am not sure that the .xxx is so good idea. That means that in future new gTLDs and ccTLDs will have stronger restriction on erotic content. Example .sk (slovakia), the do not allow erotic content. They will suggest to use the .xxx that will be a limitation.
And think about the Spam, after a half year you will block every email from .xxx
But I can also be completely wrong.

What concerns me is the potential regulations the US government may impose with this new domain name extension.

One need only read the newly approved 2257 regulations that were passed and will be enforceable June 23rd.
