Absinthe Drinkers? What the best brand?

Got a friend is wanting to get some of Absinthe from Europe. It has recently became legal in the US again.

He was in Europe and does not recall the brand/variety he was drinking.

I thought this would be a nice gift.

Would like to have some recommendation on the best tasting and the strongest. I understand Germany makes the best.

Would appreciate any suggestions.

All the brands Ive had get the job done pretty well and I dont remember any of the brands or what country they came from.

People here always seem to bring it back from holidays in Spain so that might be the best place.

What you want is authentic Czech Absinthe. The absinthe brands sold in most countries are imitations and doesn't contain thujone, (?) which is used in real absinthe. This is a hallucinogenic drug and I'm sure that your friend will have to look long and hard if he wants to get you some of that "real" Absinthe. But it's out there, so good luck with it.

no doubt, smitten by the "green fairy". I was reading something about it on the internet and this seems to have been almost like liquid crack in the days of the mid 1800's in Paris. Manet, Renoir, Guigan...no wonder impressionism was born! And Van Gogh was supposedly drinking this when he cut of his ear!

So they were actually painting what they saw...trippin stuff.

I did see that also on the internet, thujon I believe. It is not for me, it is a gift for someone else but you guys are talking me into "hey, screw your buddy! Get some for yourself!"

Spot on, couldn't have said it better. Real Absinthe is extremely difficult to find, even in the Czech Republic, I tried without success recently in fact.

Doc, you might be interested in this article:

It appeared in the NYT a week back. Apparently, a US based maker has been bettering the European quality. Haven't tried absinthe ever though. Can't find it in Buffalo yet.

I bought the stuff from France. Its called Absente and the only difference from Absinthe is the different wormwood.
This stuff put me flat on my a$$.!!

Spot on, couldn't have said it better. Real Absinthe is extremely difficult to find, even in the Czech Republic, I tried without success recently in fact.

Not that hard, you just have to know where to look. Here in Australia it's only available in selected bars and liquor stores. I think it's illegal here though.

Don't go too crazy with the stuff, it puts you on your ass pretty quickly.
