Most people in this industry call random 3-letter names e.g. tpv.com acronyms, me included. This is incorrect; we should be calling them abbreviations.

An acronym is a word formed from the initial letters of a name, such as WAC for Women's Army Corps.

An abbreviation a shortened form of a word or phrase used chiefly in writing to represent the complete form, such as Mass. for Massachusetts or USMC for United States Marine Corps.

95% of the "acronyms" offered for sale are in fact abbreviations.

Who wants to break the news to acronymfinder.com? :-D

If acronym finder finds any 3 word name where the 1st 3 letters match the domain, then it is indeed an acronym. 3 letters can be both an acronym and abbreviation.

Nope, to be an acronym the 3 letters need to make up a pronounceable word, WAC, CAT, MAT, SAC etc.

i dont know if you are correct that the dictionary definition of "acronym" refers only to pronouncable words, but i do know in common usage the word "acronym" refers to any letter combination whether it is pronouncable or not. And common usage ALWAYS trumps dictionary definitions. So you are wrong and we are right :)

The major 3 letter are in fact acronyms. Only a few are abbreviations.

If you have QJW - that's an acronym.
