Domain sets any value?

There was a trend back in 1999-2000 where sets of interrelated domains were prized, eg

gold.com
silver.com
bronze.com

Is this still the case, or is it no longer fashionable to have sets?

Do you have any good sets?

I certainly think it helps to have a set. For instance, an end-user enquiry for one name in a set could lead to the sale of the whole at a premium. Having said that if you are unwilling to break up your set, you could have problems selling, 3, 4 or 5 domains in one go as opposed to just the one.

For development purposes the advantages of owning a good set are obvious - cross-selling.

I think it matters little whether it is "fashionable" or not. You have to look at each set on it's own individual merits.

Me too, I joined domaining only in 2000, my first reg was in 1998 for a .NET :-(

Well ed, I remember that in 2002, most of my colleagues that went into the .COM industry quicksand with superhero hopes were already fired and trying to claw back to brick-and-mortar fold.

However, in 2002 there was a renaissence of sorts in the Internet URL structure when .INFO and .BIZ were introduced as the new gTLDs after 16 years to rival .COM.

Didn't you try to build your sets then on virgin ground, ed?

Back in 2000, you had to tolerate some pretty vicious cult rantings and black propaganda that .COM was the Aryan race and will rule forever.

Today you learn that the Internet is not forgiving for the slow of mind, or the concrete of thought.

I agree to a certain extent. I moved into .biz and .info last year and I reckon the prospects are good. In regards to sets, I have names that sort of relate to each other and could be used in a tentative cross-selling way - whether they could be classed as sets or good is another matter.

Fortunately been able to scoop up some top names

i think sets sort of promote "bulk discounting" so I'm not really sure that I would try to sell names as a set if i wanted top dollar..
