Escrow.com Question

So, you sell a domain to someone via escrow.com, the domain is transferred to the buyer who then applies a whois privacy blocker, they then refuse to confirm receipt of the domain to escrow.com [because obviously the tasting phase has started], what happens then?

The buyer does not have to confirm receipt, escrow funds will be released to you in about a week.....dont worry, You can also call Escrow on Monday, this usually speeds it along.

So what happens if you are the seller and you add privacy to the domain name, contact them and say you pushed it. You still get paid? Seems odd.

Obviously the domain registrar can eventually confirm if the domain was transferred, but if there is a website attached to that domain, and the buyer ditches the website and starts playing around with different monetization options, I think any search ranking losses are going to fall back on the seller if the deal goes south. A ranked website can get delisted from the search engines in a matter of days if a domain parking page gets indexed in it's place, I've witnessed this several times. Am I seeing a potentially nasty loop hole here?

OK, I see where your coming from, Escrow cant verify that the seller transferred it using the contact info escow provided correct?, I cant answer that one, its never happened to me, I strongly suggest the seller make a call to Escrow on Monday, Please post there response, I'm sure we would all like to know.

I'm considering selling a huge website that is solely search engine traffic based, and was just wondering if anyone had dealt with a scenario along these lines, and if I should consider not going the escrow.com route to protect myself.

I never sold a web site so perhaps I'm not the best candidate to answer.....I do know that Escrow guarantees the transaction for both parties involving a domain name or merchandise, I think this is a question best served if you ask them yourself.

Use moniker or sedo escrow (3%) , this way after the receipt of funds has been confirmed , sedo/moniker will ask you to push the domain to their account at your registrar and then release the domain to the buyer.

I got the same question as well. What if the buyer refuses to verify? Is there an Escrow in which acts as the middle man where you transfer the cash and name to it, and it exchanges them for both the buyer and seller?

If they don't know who sedo or moniker are it's time to educate them.
That's just my 2c...

I've used both escrow and moniker personally and both experiences were fine. If you want a very personal touch I'd recommend moniker. Monte and staff were very accessible during the whole process.

I also manage a lot of domains for a client that have been bought/sold via sedo and the three transfer agents I've dealt with are pretty on the ball...and occasionally will get a phone call directly when needing to wrap something up.

it might seem old-fashioned, but for high amounts (10k and up) I still believe in the good old paper contract, confirmed address and phone number..if someone refuses that, thats usually a red flag
