Forum owners: What got your forum going?

Hi,
All I'm fairly new to owning and running a forum.Im not experienced enough to know some of the tricks,tweaks and methods which get it going.
So forum owners, what steps/tricks/tweaks/methods did you take to get your forum up and going, with new members, active members etc.

I got my forum going by offering free domains to the person that posts the most and the person that refered the most people in a 10 day time span. Worked like a charm, my forum is now quite active, the members just stuck around and continued to post.

My forum offers free webhosting to members. I have an active user ratio of about 10/1 which isn't bad. The site supports itself through ads, and makes a 70% profit from total revenues.Although obviously I need a server for the free webhosting, its worth it...
