On the anniversary of the launch of .eu domain names, just wondering how Year 2 would go for the TLD.

Was chatting to a domainer in Canada yesterday who said .ca domain names took a few years to take off.

What do you think about the likely direction of the .eu TLD? Will it end up being a success story or not?

I think it really depends on the direction the European Union will take in the future, right now it's hard to say. Will it peak out at a loosely cohesive trading bloc, or will it eventually become some sort of a Euro incarnate of our federal government, time will tell. Until the EU becomes more clearly defined and integrated into the Euro psyche, I think .eu domains will remain a very high risk investment, with little practical development value and appeal versus other major tlds.

They are overpriced to register and way overrated in value caused by all the hype and marketing.

Most Eu nations love their own Country Codes too much for EU to be popular, IMO.

I am letting all my .eu's drop which I think they are doing this month.

It will suck. EURid is still in shambles, still seizing names from illegal registrants and registrars, still too many incontention regarding ownership.

It is total chaos and will take several years to sort out. We are talking hundreds of thousands of names illegally registered being seized. Front companies in the UK and US and other nations busted. But massive litigation and law enforcement issues over this matter.

I have cancelled perhaps 80% of my registrations. Keeping a few for the novely of them being some favorite places and subjects.

Can't wait so long until takes off and I am not sure how it will do in relation to cctld (we talking about people speaking different languages here. People think if they don't know English language they should stay out of .eu sites).
Therefore - dropping.
