Google - 9,100 results found... but only 2 pages?

I'm not an seo expert, but those in here who are would probably understand this. How come when I search for a term (usually I am using quotes "exact match") it may return thousands of results but only list 1 or 2 pages?? What is the cause of this?

it is usually because the results are related such as in the same site.
in the bottom, in google, there is usually a text that says show ommited results (or something similar). when you click that, you will see all the results.
this also happens, if the resulting text found in the first 2 pages is the same on other sites as well (duplicates or clones).
