I found a domain I was interested and did a quick WHOIS and this is what I found

Registrant:
Adam Dicker
35B-10520 Yonge Street
Suite 328
Richmond Hill, Ontario L4C 3C7
Canada

I mean really... what are the odds?

@Adam

It was download.net. I saw the reasonable minimum offer and assumed the person was from a poor country. I normally try to leverage exchange rates to get the best deal.

I still believe the odds of recognizing a WHOIS record is slim to none; regardless of how many domains the person owns.

The odds are fairly good if it's a premium name.

Edit: mxdominios beat me to it lol.

It's actually more common than not, if you check premium domains the majority are owned by few of the top domainers.

That truly amazes me. There are an insane amount of domains out there - I would of thought you could go a lifetime without seeing someone you've heard of. Guess I learn something new everyday!

the further you expand your horizons, the more registrants you may recognize in whois

or at least have acquired the resources, to discover who they are...

in case they are contacting you!

i think you're more likely to recognize a 1-word domain name whois than not.

If it's a one or two word .com domain that makes sense, or a common term or phrase, I'd say there is a good chance of it being owned by a well known domainer, or domain company (e.g.: Marchex, Demand Media, etc)

I searched for a back-of-the-woods town that had decent commerce passing through only to find out Frank Schilling already owned it.

I had the same situation once but the domain was owned by Acro (which didn't surprise me at all since it's an ancient Greek story).

Unfortunately, it wasn't Odyssey.com :p

That's definitely pretty funny. I would imagine most of the geo domains are owned by a few individuals who mass reg.

Oh Acro . By the way, do you own domaingang.com? I assume from all of your posts you do.
