I think installing an instant messaging system would be very helpful. Also storing history of chat sessions.

You can also send the person a PM and ask them to meet you in our chatroom, and from there you can private message in real time, where the other people in the room will not see your private conversation.

Or simply meet them on yahoo/msn/aim/icq/etc
