Is it illegal to own a domain name which has a companys name in it if you use it to sell or promote that companys products?

For example if i owned sonylaptops.xxx but developed the site to sell their stuff via affiliates or whatever. Would this be ok?

thanks

Not a good idea at all. You'd likely be infringing on their trademark. It's not a copyright issue.

I certainly think this is a terrible idea and would result in a lawsuit.
