Hello everyone,

Here is my struggle today and a dilemna I am sure many domainers faced at one point or another.

Some have made a specialty at catching "questionable" domain in order to cash in on the momentum:

- a earthquake in Java...and boom....some are rushing to register earthquakejava.com

- a plane crash...and some are rushing to register related domains. (Air France flight 447 domain was registered ages prior to the crash...but we might wonder what was the purpose of the registration).(Wired News: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/20...tions-about-domain-name-registration-updated/)

Meaculpa, I have in the past registered some "charity domains"...at the time it made sense...but now I am wondering....what the f.... was I thinking ?

Trying to sell them...resulted in a flood of nasty emails with the main subject: " How daaaaaaaare you ????"

Today...I have sort of learned my lesson.

However...few years back, I had registered:

- moonwalking.info and moonwalking.us
- more recently, this-is-it.info was registered with the view to sell concert tickets to the new Michael Jackson's concerts.

Well....today...I am in a bit of a struggle...

- I can picture all the big guys at Sony, the 02 center, and all the investors meeting on the back of MJ's death. Some will wonder how to refund ticket holders ? some will wonder if insurance will work ? and...

some will wonder how quick they can release a posthumous album, video, dvd, blue ray, video games, tshirt...and how quick everything can be ready to cash in on the momentum.

So, should I or should I not ?

Should I take this opportunity to promote my domains for sale:

- moonwalking.us and moonwalking.info
- this-is-it.info

Should I take this opportunity to cash in ?

Should I just respect the fact that someone died...and let other cash in on my behalf ?

Few days ago, Habitat was in the news for using the Iran election to promote his business on Twitter (BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/8116869.stm)...Since then...Habitat had to apologize...and the boomerang hit back.

So...struggle...o struggle...

What would you do ?

Thanks

I'd say that making a tribute site or something on the moonwalking domain (redirect one to the other and build the site on just one) would be a good idea - it's respectful and it's not like you only just registered the domains to 'cash in'

There's a thread on the 'other domain forums' since some idiot straight away registered michaeljacksondies.com etc. Something like this is solely looking to profit on the death of someone else and is just wrong.

But you owned these domains before these sad events and so I'd say it's fine to keep/use in a respectful manner.

Just my $0.02

Agree 100%.

There is little evidence of commercial demand for these keyword.tld combinations with or without yesterday's event, and to make matters worse, the market is flooded with weak derivative MJ names. Moonwalking.org, moonwalking .biz and this-is-it.biz can still be hand regged. Move on to more important issues. Good luck!

i agree, put up a tribute page... youtube videos, links to MJs sites etc

Moonwalking are great names.

Every clip that I have seen since his death and every special online or TV shows him moonwalking and mentions it.

Sites linking to his dance moves might get you some traffic and PPC.

Lets face it, he could dance and move and do things that no one else could and no one else can duplicate. Superb training, conditioning, and control of all his abilities. I still am impressed when I see those clips of dancing and then standing on toes.

just by posting this thread, you are letting everyone know what domains you own "specifically" and may or may not have done so intentionally, in an effort to promote them.

this is why the thread was moved from General Discussion.

however, to answer the question in general

the best time to sell something or increase price, is when it is popular or demand is high.

As Biggedon said ...

True, if you are looking to make money!!!

And as Triston said
I'd say that making a tribute site or something on the moonwalking domain
True, if you are a true fan !!

Also, as tristian said

I too have bought a domain (in my country's TLD with his name), I as a FAN who have cherished his music & Dance, will not expolit it and will not be listing the domain for sale on any forum in any near time and have already started working on a small website as a tribute

Agree 100%.
