I am developing a website that will have a "heavy" version for desktop users and a "light" version for mobile phone users. They will utilize the same database but will have different page design.

I need some advice on domain usage.

Should I go with option 1 or option 2, that is, using one or two domains. What are the pros and cons.

OPTION 1:
- using URL www.domain.com for the heavy version
- using URL www.domain.com/mobile for the light version

OPTION 2:
- using URL www.domain.com for the heavy version
- using URL www.domain.mobi for the light version

I appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Why not do both for the mobile users? For an extra $10.00/year it seems worth it.. I would also do mobile.domain.com, just for the heck of it. If you really want to push the .mobi, forward the others to it, or vice versa.

Have you considered using subdomain for the mobile version (like wap.domain.com or mobi.domain.com)? It is the best option IMHO, since first one is too long and hard to type on a mobile device and .mobi just isn't popular enough and people could misunderstand it.

That's a good point. So you would suggest something like m.domain.com for mobile users? It's still longer than using the .mobi though.

.mobi is more convenient in my opinion and more brandable as well,
redirect everything to .mobi
