Thinking about getting back into the game...

Hey all, I used to be an avid domainer however I went down a different route and became a web application engineer. I am getting bored though and am thinking of getting back into the domain game by creating my own domain media system (e.g. integrating ecommerce and generating content from third-party sources), kind of like how UltSearch back in the day. Are domain systems still viable?
