Perhaps they are showing you how to edit your LMHOSTS file to add the above names so their machines do the DNS resolution :)

Simple answer is that the whole world and his dog will have to use a client-side resolution system if his 'domains' are to answer to all. What a waste of time. He also needs a little workup on his binary maths :)
