I am thinking of starting a forum but wonder why vBulletin is usually considered better than phpbb. Are there features that phpBB doesn't have?

Obviously I know nothing about forum software. What are the differences?

Thanks!

Yes, vBulletin is a more mature product with A LOT of "hacks" (add-on's), and probably because of its paid mode and also longer history, it has a very active supporting community. If you are only using the forum for fun and don't want to pay, phpBB is fine; but for serious or business use, vBulletin is the standard, just like UBB in the past.

Oh, just so you know phpBB's server was hacked just 2 weeks ago.

is the chatroom included in the vbulletin ?

is the chatroom included in the phpbb ?

Neither vBulletin or phpBB include chatrooms. But, various chatrooms include integration scripts for both systems, so that you can have a unified login (same username/password combo for the forum and chat).

Ok, as stated the differences between phpbb and vb are too many to list but security and updates are a big reason vb is better.

If you want a really REALLY good free forum then i would highly recommend simplemachines.org
I am using 2 of them right now and although not as many hacks as some others it is very nice and easy to use.

I also have 1 phpbb, 2 Vbs and an IPB (I like IPB too).

If you are good with php then any will work if you are going to hack the crap out of it but still vb would be the best if you are considering paid as well as free.

phpBB is alright if you want a free board, with 'limited' features. If you want something more professional, I would look at your other options.

Invision Power Board offers a chatroom that is fully integrated and officially supported.

Thank you for all the replies, guys. I appreciate it.

phpbb also has lots of hacks. Goto phpbbhacks.com

The hackers used a vulnerability in AWStats, and not in the PHPBB software itself.PHPBB is as good as the others when it comes to security(remember, yahoo was hacked too)

invision and phpBB have ways more hacks/addon then vBulletin.

And i find that invisionize.com is alot more organize than vbulletin.org

But i dont know why, i still went to get a vBulletin license ;)

depeneds what you want it for, if your just starting out and not sure how the forum will go, start with phpbb when you start getting popular transfer to vB, or you could go one step future and code your own forum. :-) there are chatroom hacks for both phpbb and vB. as with any software you should keep it upto date to minimise ppl hacking into it, where theres a will theres a way, no software is 100% full proof
