This protection measure provides our customers the opportunity to register domains they have previously searched without the fear that the name will be already taken through Front Running.

But yet they do it to NON CUSTOMERS! "Protection measure" my a*s!, It's only a matter of time before they start monetizing... After I read this, I thought it only worked for logged in customers, but that's not the case.. I did a test on Godaddy and NS using DotMobiWillDie.com

DOTMOBIWILLDIE.COM is already taken.

yeah - I did a few tests as well - from different computers and with different registrars - all the same. It must be a server side based program and nothing on your personal machine. It's wickedly quick for some names: almost like there is an internal rating system for which words are likely to be more important.

Looks like there are two threads on a collision course with one another. The statement by the NetSol VP is getting plenty of feedback as well.

That brings back memories of ten years ago - January 1998. I was a newcomer to the US, with no financial capability to register dozens of names. But I played a "game" for entertainment: looking up domains at the Network Solutions web site. I would then occasionally check back a week or two later and they were gone. Two names that I can recall finding available are DoubleZero.com and TripleSix.com - both registered since February 1998. Much later, in mid-2000, I got involved in buying my first domains with the intent to resell and I was told how Network Solutions had been practicing the selling of WHOIS queries to third parties.

ICANN *must* be lobbied from all sides to end this practice of domain tasting that allows now the registars to play such games on the backs of users around the world.

I swear - the greed and underhandedness big businesses in this country are resorting to is downright repulsive.

So for the relative noobs like myself - what are the best places to look up names that won't fall into this trap? I usually look them up with my GoDaddy reseller site (Wild West) - safe or no?

What do we gather from the list above?

That it's a list of domains that were looked up for availability due to domain traffic. That's the core reason why NetSol wants to entrap these queries. These are not domains that Joe Bloke would register for their business. So NetSol is not out there looking after you - they are looking after #1.

This is nothing but profiting from public concern, that is front running.

NEtSol has made a business plan out of it, I have never done availability check on their site, but the general public will, because they think more price = better service. They do a search, they leave it without buying many do then they go here and there do a look up again say at another registrar, domain shows up as unavailable/taken! then they come back to netsol running and do a availability check wow available! this time around, "let me hurry and grab it before someone else does" paying that out of the world price and also thinks "I am one lucky guy/girl who got the domain I want only at netsol, they are damn good".

We know this stuff because we are drowned into this but who cares and knows in the real world very few. One must applaud their business logic and understanding of their prospective customer psychology. I am sure no domainer will ever lookup or register a domain there after knowing this. Still netsol makes millions out of this single step by the time they get to stop because of outcry or because of ICANN recommendation. This magic window is enough to balance the sheets.

This is a HUGE HUGE HUGE violation of privacy and I know a customer is gonna sue their *** off...what if they check a domain name from home and then want to register it from their computer when they goto work? Or what if they are just checking the domain from a public computer or friends computer? How do they determine if you can have the name or not once they "reserve" it...a simple browser cookie? WTF this is nuts
