We pay 3 times more for a car(same) than our US friends.
Average houseprice in May was equivilant to $600000....( and thats after 18 months of price drops )

Anyone that has been to both Prague and Budapest knows that Prague is much cheaper (food, beer, accommodation, transport). Wish they were right though, then i could have a main dish plus a beer for 6$ in a restaurant here, like you can in Prague.

I guess most people would work at the most expensive city but live at least 45 minutes commute away. Like in NYC, a 500 sq ft studio would cost you $600+k in midtown. While if you can commute 45 minutes away, similar studio would have cost around $150k. Other cost of living are about the same... housing is the most expensive.

It's all relatively.

I lived in Tokyo and Hong Kong for about six years and don't find it to be that expensive unless you live like an expats which this report is about.

I've been to Beijing and Singapore many times and I don't think it's that expensive unless you to buy foreign products or eat at foreign restaurants. They should make the list for more general/average population.

I live in Oslo, ranked as the #4 most expensive city and I completely agree.

If you avoid all the fast food shops (which have fixed prices all over the country), a dinner for two persons at a restaurant costs around $200, even more if you want beer/wine etc.

In the bars/clubs, a beer is around $14, drinks $20+ and cover charge is usually $15-$40.

A 2-room, small apartment in the center of the city (not necessarily in a "nice" area of the city) costs from $300k, up to $500k. Prices are so high now, that students and younger people have no chance at all to get in to the real estate market, unless they are rich and/or have rich parents etc.

A 5 minute taxi ride costs ~$25 (twice as much if it's after 11PM).

A popular pizza shop called "Peppe's" (crap pizza IMO) charges $60 (!) for a large pizza delivered to your door. That's with no extras.

A 2009 Mercedes SL63 will cost you $550,000 after all taxes and fees are added.

I'm actually surprised that Miami / Ft Lauderdale isn't on the list. We thought it would be cheaper living here but the only thing that went down was our pay rates (the pay structure is about 10% lower here than in NJ).

Insurance is more expensive, houses are a little less expensive, cars are about the same, food is more expensive, utilities are more expensive, gas is slightly cheaper. The only thing that tips the scale are highway tolls.

We're not even in the top 5 for North America.

My mother just got back from England. Things were so pricey in London that she didn't bother to buy anything. So I'm not surprised that its #3 on the list.

Does anybody here find it odd that New York City at #22? I would have thought it would have been in the top 10.

According to this index, McDonalds in Norway sells the most expensive Big Mac in the world. A Big Mac in USA costs $3.41 , in Norway the same Big Mac costs $7.76, twice as much. :uhoh:

Maki, blame it on the damn euro :-( When I left Greece in 1998 drachma was still keeping prices under control. But our brilliant politicians did not enforce price control and items that cost 50 drachmas changed overnight to 50 euro cents. With the EUR/GRD exchange fixed at 340 drachmans, that meant prices went up 300% overnight.

On another note, food, clothing, entertainment and services are so much cheaper in Florida and America in general, than in parts of the Eurozone.

I visited London again last year - 15 years since my first visit - and I was shocked by the prices. Of course the 2/1 ratio of the British pound vs. the dollar didn't help either.
