Bad move I think. When will people realize sex and gambling will always be a part of our lives. You can't hide it and Ted Haggard learned that one the hard way. Pun intended.. Churches can run bingo halls and have raffles and as long as it's in the name of god it's all fine. Governments can setup lotteries and allow casinos but no online gambling. This is precisely why Repulicans are losing their stonghold. It's not a do as I say not as I do world.

Even if the owners vowed to never have sex, gamble, own any names related to sex or gambling or visit any site related to those subjects in this thread you could never honestly be sure they are the clean, reputable, bible toating (or beating) people they portray themselves to be as we have all learned from various priests, preachers, evangelists, and political leaders as of late.

I just went in a dumped all of my personal names and the truth is adult/gambling makes up 1% of my portfolio.. Going to chat with a client who's portfolio I manage aswell. Considering his adult and gambling related names outweigh his non I don't think it will be hard to convince him to do the same. No matter how it is portrayed it's censorship.

That's because G and Y won't pay for it, believe me TM's and TM typos will be next.

I'm not talking about parking. I'm talking about names listed for sale there. Here's the email for those that don't have it.

Subject: Afternic Policy Change All headers

Dear Members, Domainers and Friends:

We want to share with you a recent decision that we believe will put Afternic in an even better position to serve the small business, SOHO community and greater domain industry.

After extensive consideration, we have decided to no longer accept domain names that promote hate, sex, obscenity or self-destructive behavior, such as substance abuse, violence and gambling. The sole rationale behind our decision is to make Afternic a more comfortable site for mainstream domain name shoppers, especially small business owners. We recognize that taking a leadership role on this issue may have a negative financial impact on our business in the near term. Nonetheless, we believe strongly that it's the right thing long-term decision for our industry and Afternic.

In the next few days, we will de-list these kinds of domain names currently posted on our site. Members who own such names will receive a letter from us informing them which names will no longer be listed. We hope that they, and others, will understand that we have no interest in censorship and that we fully support First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and expression. And, there is certainly no lack of other Internet sites where such names are welcomed.

The Internet, much like the early days of television, is still a new frontier. We believe it is up to the industry leaders-and we include Afternic here-to step up and determine what constitutes professional standards and practices. We take this action in the interest of socially responsible corporate behavior and hope that it leads to further healthy industry dialog and discussion on the topic.

We greatly appreciate your business and support of Afternic, and will continue to endeavor to earn your confidence and trust.

Very best regards,

Roger Collins

President of Afternic, Inc.

Hi,
imo banning tms & typos makes perfect sense. it can go other places, undergound whatever! ebay! lol
i am amazed it's lasted this long tbh
If afternic ban sex & gambling it will be hilarious. How to cut your own throat. their competitors must be pissing! Even sedo are doing the opposite! They are letting adult into their auctions.
This big Moniker adult auction will wake people up. Adult domains make up 1% of my portfolio, wish i had some more quality ones, not less
banning violence & hatred, fine....professional. sex & gambling, oh dear.
glad i'm not a share holder.
seems like a lot of big sites have had some important emails saying wiseup, to me

It's the spineless cave-in (by collins bros.) to the conservative/religious freaks/mainstream corporate pressures in countinuing disneyfication/dumbification of America.

Forget about living free in this country, unless living-free exclusively means a culture of consumption, tailgate barbecueing and jackass entertainment.

The whole freaking world is opening up in the 21st century, and the land of the brave, and home of the frame is tightening up like a Catholic church schoolboy's sphinkter at the sight of his spiritual padre approaching.

Congrats!

Buy Domains deciding to sell their "own" adult and gambling was their own decision. Putting yourself on a pedestal and saying follow me down the road of professionalism and morality is another.

"We believe it is up to the industry leaders-and we include Afternic here-to step up and determine what constitutes professional standards and practices."

Basicly saying anyone dealing in gambling and sex related names is unprofessional.

You can quote me on this Afternic. Stick your determinations up your A$$..

Up until around the time of BD's sell off which was also after BD was basicly bought out by a venture co they didn't sell their names at afternic. Afternic just happened to be the peddler of those names. They didn't mind that dirty money did they? I guess thats the first of the dirt on their moral cleansing. Thanks for the reminder.

Ok, I'll stick my neck out and say I think it's a great decision. I applaud it. I don't understand something. Why do people think it's a church thing? Freedom is what freedom is and they have the freedom to not accept those types of names. Good or bad decision it's theirs to make and they will live or die by it. So what you can list them elsewhere. Some restaurants choose to allow smoking, drinking, etc. If you smoke you drive down the street to the restaurant that allows it, what's the big deal? We live by choices that are not as black and white as you make them. I hate the porn industry and everything about it but that's just me. That too my friends is a choice. Cheers,

Acro

"We believe it is up to the industry leaders-and we include Afternic here-to step up and determine what constitutes professional standards and practices."

The belief there is something wrong with sex and gambling is directly tied to religeous beliefs thats where the link comes from. You're right they have every right to decide what to do with their site but self-proclaiming themselves as "leaders" and insinuating anyone who deals in those businesses are somehow unprofessional is a problem. We have plenty examples of "leaders" who talk the talk but don't walk the walk lately.
