I recently picked up an expired domain that had a lot of subdomains used from the previous owner. My .htaccess files has the normal 404 error code one but that doesn't seem to work for a subdomain. Can anyone tell me how to do it?

Thanks.

Why don't you wildcard the domain?

As in the DNS do a *.domain.com to the ip address of your main website, that way all traffic will go there, and in apache add server alais *.domain.com in the http.conf or Vhost.conf which ever your server uses

ok thanks, I will see if that's possible with my server. It's managed so it might be something I have to ask to have setup.

If you're domain name is registered with eNom, you might be advised to do it through their DNS controls. Your hosting service may charge extra fees to do this.
