Instead of using CST's you should use GMT -##:##. Its much easier to tell because that way you only need to know your GMT and subtract the other persons.

Someone has to subtract or add always unless you're in the the same time zone referred to. GMT is not easier for me. It's easier for people closer to or at GMT.

It depends on who is the more powerful. GMT is the MEAN time when Britain was the centRe of the earth; later, that came to be Eastern Time when New York (U.S.) took over. That's why you hear most about EST/EDT, more about Pacific Time and less about Central Time.
