Geo domains took the spotlight this week with Penticton.com being purchased by Canada's Shaun Pilfold for 88,000 Canadian Dollars ($75,823 US)

got the news at DNJournal http://www.dnjournal.com/domainsales.htm

let's hope this makes the national canadian newspapers -

I WAS HOPING IT WAS the .CA and not the .com

Most city name .ca domains are reserved, are they not?

Anybody know the population off hand?

Penticton (population: 30,985)
You are right the city names are reserved in Canada - that was the .COM that sold -

I think it was a great buy. The Okanagan Valley is a beautfiful area, the most desert-like climate in Canada. Penticton has two lakes on either side of it. It is a huge winery area, with lots of summer festivals, and Penticton even hosts a major IronMan competition every year. The lake has a big hotel and casino on it. Huge tourist destination and retirement area. The owner also owns Kelowna.com (much bigger city) and Vernon.com, so he has the three key cities in that area locked up. I'll be interested to see how it's developped. The buyer is actually a member here at dnforum too.

Penticton - wow!

Our supercomputer calc shows that it will take 150 year to pay off that purchase price based on the PPC model.

hahaha! I got a speeding ticket in this town 4 years ago...

Lucky there are more options than PPC - the guy plans to develop the site.

I would say it is the world record name sale for a small 30,000 pop. town! Where the Guinness Book reps are? LOL

Not sure, but towns are not reserved. I recently sold sardis and have a few others still.

Nice sale though, and Penticton keeps growing like the entire Interior of BC.

Yes, this is a very good sale, geo domains are usually a good buy...

Penticton's population is not 30k, it is 50k in 2007.
