Most domainers have been focusing on American and European domain markets for many years but might know quite little about CN market. Here are some stats about CN market we'd like to share with all of you, the DNF members!

The 24th Statistical Report on Internet Development in China (Report) published by China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) on July 16 shows that by June 30, 2009, China had remained ahead in three indicators-number of Internet users (338 million), number of broadband users (320 million) and registration volume of top-level domain names (12.96 million), with the popularization rate of the Internet rising steadily. Affected by the launch of 3G business, the number of mobile Internet users has also reached 155 million, accounting for 46% of all Internet users and surging by 32.1% within six months.

Given the recent crackdown I think investing in .cn domains has become a much less attractive option :)
Perhaps for the Chinese it is still worthwhile and even then I suppose they are subject to the same red tape.

You can always invest in numeric .com domains, that is what I do.

Most of the big brands / websites in China use .com

baidu, tudou, alibaba, taobao etc...

for CN name there are .com.cn / .cn and .cn.com , i feel its too confusing... i like .com domains that use pinyin words like dichan.com

I would also like to add... if you own a .com or other big brand, its important to register the .cn names to stop copies or theft of your brand.... as groupon lost everything to someone who registered groupon.cn and copied the entire site... and has forced groupon to enter china under the name as gaopen.com

Isn't this TM violation?
