.coop domains

I was watching TV when an advert for the co-operative supermarket came on, they then listed their website address with a .coop extention, I first thought it was a typo but after checking it works, just wondering if any of you have heard of it? They have a strict criteria for registration which seems to be why keywords registered in every other extention are available.
