If you do not have a corporation already a DBA will not provide you the protection an LLC will. If you already have a corporation you can do your Corporation Name, Inc/LLC DBA New Name. Of course this is my opinion and not legal advice.

Depends on the state but an LLC is a separate entity. A DBA is not a legal entity in my state so you have no protection. If you were to get sued you could be held personally liable. I'm not an attorney so take it for what's worth. Depends on your needs, products and services you offer. Then there are other consideration such as what state to form an LLC, etc...

Exactly what they said. If you're John Smith, you can have a DBA (doing business as) name but it's just an alias for your commercial activity. Forming a corporation, or an LLC has a series of benefits that include tax deductions, asset protection and asset portability, expense write-offs etc. The cost to form an LLC depends on your state but it can be done online & without a lawyer - for people with average IQ and up :D

Assuming you're in Kaaaalifornia :D here's a direct link to the State page.

DBA is like you give an alias for your bzness or yourself to look more professionally. It's not a real registered entity.

DBA is much like a service name; not an official entity, just an alias. Just like your username here, it is not your REAL name, just the name you do business online under.
