Depends on the type of the software, its target audience and the machine it runs on. Also, the price and support offered are deciding factors.
Commonly used "shareware" is a large market of software that functions with a time limit or functionality limit until paid for.

Reason I ask is because I am looking for a stable income, more stable than I have now. I get good money from software jobs from clients but if I just sold software there wouldn't be more work.
