Do you think selling software is profitable?

Depends on the type of the software, its target audience and the machine it runs on. Also, the price and support offered are deciding factors.

Commonly used "shareware" is a large market of software that functions with a time limit or functionality limit until paid for.

I used to dropship pc/game software but it wasn't that profitable. I am sure the high end stuff could do well, but distributors wouldn't let anyone sell it.

Reason I ask is because I am looking for a stable income, more stable than I have now. I get good money from software jobs from clients but if I just sold software there wouldn't be more work.
