I had an odd realization the other day, when I asked my wife for some objective advice about a domain I was thinking of purchasing. She was able to give me a spot on value appraisal, despite that fact that she has little to no interest in domains, and has never dealt in any way with the business directly. Suddenly I realized I've turned my wife into some sort of "passive domainer". As the words "niche market" and "keyword value" came out of her mouth, an odd moment of realization came over me, and I was sent to the floor laughing hysterically.

Just wondering if anyone else here had experienced a similar thing, or what your spouses opinions are on domaining.

Wow, what a loaded question. Did my wife put you up to this?

She doesn't understand the fascination of it but definitely understands the power of the right name and words. And the checks I get.

She knows more about it than I thought but that is because I do talk about it a lot.

Haha...

My friends on the other hand, can't seem to get their heads around the most fundamental basics of domaining. They all laugh at the notion of paying for any domain, and believe the concept of PPC is me telling an unfunny joke, as that would just be "way too easy" to manipulate, and besides, who makes money that way. I think a couple of them believe I'm unemployed, and making up stories about the revenue I'm making.

think maybe she is "domaining" behind your back :)

the bigger the checks get...the bigger their eyes get and the better their hearing gets, when you talk or mention domains.

soon they looking all over your shoulder and trying to look in the screen while you looking, then you look at them and ask "what you looking at".

We have 5 vehicles, three have specialized plates with domain names.

My wife has become well versed at telling people about each one.

My wife thinks I should only sell my domains for xx,xxx each. Doesn't really care about the nuts and bolts of it, just wonders why I don't make the big sales that I tell her I've read about. So until I do, domaining is just a side thing that I spend too much time doing.

I always check generics out with my wife (and boys) - if we have consensus its good to go. Unfortunately we are all pretty (6 people at home with 6 computers) wired so its not always the best sampling. But whenever she instantly can see where the name would fit, it's a very good sign.

My wife gets it and sometimes has good insight/instincts...she likes the cash it generates...but she cannot stand the time I spend on the computer.

It is getting to be ridiculous...I have to sneak out in the middle of the night to mine for domains.

I never shut up about domains with my NEW g/f and she too has become quite the passive domainer, she actually told me to check on a domain that was eventually my biggest sale/flip ever...when me and my partner sold the domain for 100k not long ago everyone stopped giving me any bullsh*t at all about being on the computer so much, friends and family all think you are loony spending all your time and money online until they see you buying a bunch of new shit and loaning them money, etc...it's so funny how people's attitudes change when they start seeing the reality of success and working for yourself.

My ex g/f who put me thru hell last year & was the eventual part time porn star now works 2 jobs 12 hours a day, is in rehab, and drives some p.o.s car & gained like 20 lbs...we still talk on the phone every once in awhile so she knows about my life a little still and how well business is going NOW that she is out of the circle (how coincidental? lol)...she used to always bitch and moan about me and my work and start whining whenever I would grab the laptop and go online...I was always so exicted and wanted to tell her everything and talk about domains but she just wanted to party and would always seem to take the wind out of my sails (& sales)...it's funny how times can change and now I'm riding around in 3 different cars and I just hang out all day and eat out every night wherever I want...while everyone else is working and being part of the rat race I am buying shit I don't even need on ebay and checking my ppc stats and updating escrow deals..I too struggled for many years and I used to work 60+ hour weeks but I always put domaining first and tried to stay positive despite lows and hard times. If you have a g/f or wife who is holding you back in this business or giving you a headache about it toss her ass on the street or explain to her that the lobster dinner she is going to eat tonight relies on your domain business and she damn well better respect that or hit the road. You have to exist in a positive and supportive environment to excel in any business.

Very good advice! I had to tell my GF the same when we met; domains are everything to me- cars, gas, rent, holidays etc.
