Expired domains (in gTLDs) usually get renewed automatically upon expiry so the current holder benefits from a grace period, otherwise domain would enter redemption from day one... so that could be normal. But normally the expiry date from the registry whois reverts to the original expiry date when the domain enters redemption.
But domain names can be sent to redemption early for any reason.
