Really? From the Deleted Domains list and others I thought today's drops were less than for weeks!
Where have you been finding them?

Right chatcher.

I assumed the only way you could know was if you had picked it up, but I was wrong.

How long before we find out who picked it up through whois? I think it is quicker now than it used to be.

I don't think it is possible to tell if it has dropped until you see an updated WHOIS showing that it has or hasn't dropped. Any WHOIS you look at now will be the old information, unless you happen to find the "new" registrar, and it is one that does an instant update. (many don't).

Snapnames don't take the snap off for something like 12-24 hours, I think, so that is no way of telling.

Anyway, that's how I understand it.

What makes you think it dropped, or is that a secret? ;-)

chatcher said "The reason I know it dropped is that I was trying to register it with a script and it went from unavailable to available, then back to unavailable before I could get it. (Happens a lot with the particular registrar I was using.)"

If it`s true, the the name dropped, and why would he lie?

All of the lists I can check up to 4pm today show that it is still Pending Delete and awaiting a drop. I will be interested to see what whois shows tomorrow. I'm not a betting man but I would be very surprised if its dropped yet.

medslist.com

Was on pendingdelete status and was available when I checked.

Well done chatcher for being the first to post a sighting of a drop under the new system.

Prize on its way :)

Not so. As someone pointed out above it's not uncommon to see a name pop as available and gone again before you an register it.
Especially if you're using a two step registrar or a desktop script. Although it's unlikely you'd ever see a top name that way.

Also if you think you know which registrar might have gotten it you can always do a telnet to the registry to check the name and see if it's now in their local db.

What's the big deal about americanriders.com? A snap costs about $50 to $70. I'd say TheRiders.com is just as good for $60. Well, i had it at $60 until just now when I decided to change it to $100. I think it must be the psychology about getting a domain on a drop. I guess if you get a domain on a drop, you get the feeling of "winning" something.

Ok, thanks .. well, I haven't been trying for dropping domains for months as I figure the quality of most of them must be very poor and the few good ones that do make it to the delete stage probably have about 100 people trying for each one of them. I had some snaps on some decent ones but hardly any made it to the delete stage and snapnames couldn't get the few that did. That was a couple of months ago. Well maybe I'll spend some more time looking for domains to try to use up my snaps. I've got about 10 left.
