Ok, I know Black History Month is almost over, but the need for a black history website for kids continues...at least in my opinion.

EbonyKids.com

Any spot valuations for this name? Site is functioning. Haven't started trying to develop traffic yet.

This one is for my daughter. I use it to post things I think she should know about, and I try to get her to write little things to post as well. It's mostly to help her in school. There is real content on it though, and some of her little friends from school are beginning to visit.

Long term value I agree is probably limited, but it sure is a fun project. :D

Cool site TheBansche.

When I valuated the name I was just talking resell value.

I see the world through a different window and thankfully I'm color blind :)

"I know Black History Month is almost over" No its not! ;)

Cheers!

I know you meant the name alone, undeveloped. My hope is that the site on top of the name helps increase the value. The site itself obviously isn't for sale. If I ever got an offer on the name, I'd just move the site to my daughters domain, or to IQKid.com and kill the "Afro-centricity" ...which was dictated by the name itself. I hear that domains with content and traffic do better.

...although I still agree it's probably not as great a name asTheFlag.us (my favorite). :D

Great name for African-American children's website!

With development and some investment capital, this could be a premier website for this market. Don't give up on this project.
It will be well worth the effort.

Value=Priceless!

It might be worth something to Ebony magazine if they decided to create a kids focus portal. Its a very good idea for them, but it is really *their* brand. Outside of them, I don't see the word "ebony" carrying much weight. "BlackKids.com" is more generic. Unfortunately, I think someone like Ebony would be MUCH better off branding as http://kids.ebony.com, as Ebony[PERSON/NOUN].com or Black[PERSON/NOUN].com is a name space largely dedicated to porn or otherwise adult subjects. Examples: BlackGirls.com, BlackTeens.com, BlackMen.com, BlackWomen.com, BlackBoys.com, etc...

Given the attention pedophilia is getting these days, if I were to open a web portal for black kids with the best of intentions, I might think twice about it before coming up with something a bit more creative.

Quite true. These insights hadn't occured to me.

This project was originally IQkid.com, but when I acquired the EbonyKids.com name, I morphed the project. The main reason being there are FAR fewer quality sites dedicated to "black" kids, and I thought specializing would help the site stand out better.

Kind of like Ford Fairlane, the "Rock and Roll Detective."

I don't buy the "Their Brand" argument though regarding Ebony Magazine. That's like saying "YoungPEOPLE.com" is piggy-backing on PEOPLE Magazine's brand. or "OurTIME.com" is riding on the coat-tails of Time Magazine. That said, I'm not really in a position to put up much of a fight if they decided to force the issue. This is just a hobby, after all.

We'll see what happens. The general consensus seems to be:

Land = $0
Building = $50 (thanks to Template Monster)
Furnishings = in dispute
Total Value = not much

That said, this is the only domain (besides TheFlag.us) that I actually have an incentive to keep building on, in spite of the intrinsic value (which I admit I was hoping would be more).

...and I still have LoudPuppet.com! :D You only need ONE money domain.

On second thought, I don't think I should be so hard on the name. I just looked at what you've done with it, and its nice. Did some research and I can see there's certainly some interest in the phrase, and some groups unconnected to Ebony magazine have picked it up and started using it. It's a little less crass than "black". Thankfully, Google lists the "porn" results at the very end.

I didn't mean to imply that Ebony would have an automatic case against you though. I meant that "EBony" is a strong brand in the black community. Just like if you'd created JetKids.com or EssenceKids.com, they would have an automatic connection in the target community with those magazines. Sites like BlackPlanet.com or BlackVoices.com stand much more on their own than an EbonyFamily.com or something. Also, "TeenPeople.com" IS a brand of People magazine. ;)

I think EbonyKids.com could be a good stand alone kids portal.

I hear you about wanting to create something positive on the Net though. I definitely appreciate the work you've put in so far. Great job! I'm still trying to do something nice with FamilyUnited.com myself. The more positivity people can foster the better off we all are.

Undeveloped, I'd value the name around $100-200. Developed, it could easily be much much more. You'd probably need to make some disclaimers though regarding the name "Ebony".

Good luck,

I have a big dislike for anything that has to seperate people...

But thats because I sometimes lean to far with "we are all same " nonsense..we are not all the same and I think this can be a special place for black kids to have..

Great site .. have you considered adding the history of blacks in the service, as Cowboys and Mountain men.. some really great stories that Kids would love..

like http://www.beckwourth.org/Biography/index.html

http://www.abacom.com/~jkrause/fields.html (great read.. not exactly for the real young kids but the early teenagers will get a kick out StageCoach Mary !)

http://www.todaysseniors.com/memories/marines.shtml

Black Indians

http://www.blackindians.com/

a ton of interesting stuff history... real Black pioneers .. instead of the rappers always getting the headlines...

$400-$600 EbonyKids

That name is available for registration right now. All the other major extensions are taken.

I'm not sure if this 'term' is still considered politically correct - so I guess that would be an issue to decide on first. I hear the word used all the time (without any negative intent) on the HistoryChannel and PBS - etc. - so I don't think it's considered offensive. Then again - I'm white... so I don't pretend to know how black folks might feel about it.

Maybe a (single word domain) site about black folks in the USA? Past & present - that sort of thing.

I agree with Bidawinner, and would like to add that my mother ran a wonderful Black History program at her church every February and its now carried on by the youth department. It was a great exercise to help her with every year, and if you were to take the step of creating activities that foster pride and acknowledgement of history for black familes, you could really have a runaway hit on your hands.

I helped create and run the Family Resource section of SmarterKids.com for a while, and I think one of the most wonderful sections was the Activity Calendar:
http://www.smarterkids.com/rescenter/
http://www.smarterkids.com/rescenter/calendar/calendar.asp

There is an activity for every single day of the entire year. You could easily get away with far less work, while adding an extremely wonderful efficacy to the enjoyment of your site by visitors. vBulletin's "calendar" feature, or any number of free calendar scripts on the web could get you started.

Contact me if you're interested in hearing more. I have a number of drawings I've done for my mother of black pioneers you could put up on the website for "coloring" activities parents can download and print. They're line drawings, and perfect for that. Kid sites are fun and they're are a number of "staples" that help them along.

Also, consider registering with the ICRA to get your site "labelled" as a KIDS site ( http://www.icra.org/_en/label/ ). This will help you from being automatically "blocked" by accident. Also, publish a privacy policy when you can.

While one wouldn't want to encourage separatism (I agree with Bidawinner's sentiments), promoting differences in culture is important and educational. Sometimes its learning that helps bring us closer.

Best Regards,

Hmmmm...perhaps you are right.

Maybe 'negro' is too close the other 'N' word. I wasn't really thinking about that.

Not too close to the 'N' word, I'm thinking its just antiquated (just my opinion though). Reminescent of saying "colored" folk and crowding around the radio for the days news. :D It all gets very PC very quickly, but it's just my instincts talking at this point.

Edit: Just double-checked the word "crass"... I actually didn't mean such a strong term. I just meant to imply it felt a bit blunt. BlackPeople.com sounds better to me than Blacks.com for instance. Likewise, to my American ears, "Negros" reminds me of watching "Roots" or seeing all that old civil rights footage they air during February or on Martin Luther King day. Often times I think phrases like "the black community" are like "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus"... easy ways of referring to and understanding distinctions in society, whether or not it is accurate is always another matter. Recently, I was wrestling with "Native American" vs. "American Indian", and I think I ended up seeing both being used in many different and respectible places. --Conversely, I know terms like "Oriental" when referring to people is just out... ;)

Yup. Literally means "black people" (check "Merriam Webster online http://www.m-w.com ). It has different meanings and pronunciations in different cultures and languages.

An American saying, "My friend is a Negro." (Nee-Gro) would probably be different than a Dominican saying "Su futuro es muy negro." (neh-gro) One sounds like an anachronism, the other pretty natural.
