Facebook's new chat feature?

Does everyone else hate that facebook has made it mandatory that you make yourself available to chat.

I cannot seem to turn it off permanently...I hit the "gear" button and disable it, but then when I return or go to a new screen it it back...

Facebook is going to be their own worse enemy as they take away users ability to choose the level of how they will be exploited.

Join/Try it (whatever that button said) and then turn it off via the gear icon.
