Yup, you can start earning a little affiliate commissions to pay for the renewal fee, and by developing you're adding value to the domain name should you receive an offer later on to buy it and the website.

Plus the time needed keeps you out of trouble

i am more concern about traffic.

i see too many great designed sites that have near no traffic.

find a business model to generate traffic is more on my mind.

whoever find the answer shall be a winner.

trafficmp.com seems doing great, gopopup.com no bad either.

what they do for a living? traffic exchange.
