Microsoft was sued for hundreds of millions of dollars in order to break the browser, IE, away from integration with the OS - and now Google does the exact same thing; integrating Chrome & OS. Am I missing something here? I expect Microsoft to blast away full salvo.

It might be a hit for netbooks and mobile devices, but it will never beat Windows and other "local" OS'es when it comes to desktop computers. Of course we want our (confidential) documents and pictures on our own local storage, as well as gamers and graphics artists wants to store data locally. I'm sure that moderate computer users might enjoy using a web-OS, but computer geeks and professionals will still buy new hardware to maximize their (local) rig's performance and of course run local OS'es like Windows 7, different Linux distros etc.

Google must have seen a hole somewhere. Watching MS waste millions on lawsuits etc was google's opportunity to see where MS went wrong. Presently, Google has so many browsers as is (along with Chrome there is iGoogle. I expect that the EC will slap this around a bit. I would imaging Google is ready for a fight and to put up some bucks to back that fight.

Actually I read that they stressed it had nothing to do with android, and was a true desktop OS based on the linux kernel.

This is awesome news. They've completely given up on search innovation, burned through just about all public trust, and are now working full time on brand dilution. With less than a 2% market share, Chrome has flopped. I'm certain Chrome OS will follow suit. There is no way in hell the general public will upload an OS on to their PC that is manufactured by a company brand synonymous with ZERO customer support (without even going into privacy concerns).

I have talked to a real living breathing MS employee over the phone. Find the one guy that can say that about Google, and you might just cross paths with Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster.

I am 99% sure any browser, OS, etc is doing this right now.

Called "targeted advertising", "geo-targeting", and a host of other names all doing the same thing...recording your browsing habits and putting ads based on your location and your searches.

Unless you have a computer totally disconnected and never used for connecting to the internet, this is done from day one of signing on.

->Windows 7 scheduled to come out in a month, Chrome scheduled for 1 year.
->MSN goes live with a new SE, Google announces a new OS.

Google have been doing things they berated Microsoft for a few years ago for some time now.

Google is well passed their honeymoon period.

I certainly wont be touching any operating system they release.

Lets think how this will play out:-

The operating system will have major bugs but they will hide the bug reports and silently update the software (well they do it with chrome including a bug that allowed people to have an iframe that actually pointed to an exe file and it ran on the client pc)

They will keep the operating system in beta for years (gtalk 4 years old and still in beta, gmail 5 years and still in beta. In fact many of their API's stayed in beta and once people were using them and relied on them they removed them as they did with google video which some people had paid for accessing videos).

Then of course when issues occur they will say "oh never mind, and by the way did you spot the beta badge when you entered the room?"

They will (as suggested above) ship gtalk, gmail client and chrome with the OS (but of course it's google so it's ok)

The o/s will display adsense or other type of ads at every opportunity,

Emm..Sun has a long history with Google before
Personally I won't support Google OS. Fullstop. Sounds arrogant but there is a reason to it.
