I have a firstlast name of a famous muscian (singer) of a rock band. Hes actually a local dude from my neighborhood and I kinda know him. Im sure he wouldnt mind if I asked him but i'm worried about his label coming after me. I was thinking about starting a fan site using socialengine.

Thoughts?

Did he ask you to secure the name for you?
If not, you are infringing.

Give him the name, or cancel it. Tell him you did him a favor & grabbed it before some evil cybersquatter got it.

You'll never know - he may ask you to make and run a website for him.

Someone has my name and I was told I cant do squat about it, so why cancel it? Right now its pointing to a minisite related to credit cards I have.

Just my 2 cents.

I think you really only have to "worry", if the name is trademarked.

Is there more than one person with this name?

its not tm'd and yes, theres plenty with same name.

Good point. If it's a John Smith type name, it would be easier..

You know him and think he won't mind? You should ask him, I think it could be pretty awkward.

The fan site might be a way to go. Are fan sites allowed to have advertising and be profitable though?
