How good is a .us domain to use

Hello Everyone.....

I found a great domain name I want, the problem is it's a .us domain. The .com and .net, is taking already.

Will the .com and .net take traffic from a .us, how does search engines handle them. And do people remember them, and type them in or do they forget and type .com in.

There are a great many popular sites on the .us extension , although over time you would loose some typeins to the .com but the majority would still go to your .us
