How long does the average individual stick with domaining?

I have put in some good time on the domaining forums and have seen a lot of people come and go… some more reputable than others.

Is it that people are too ambitious in the beginning and lose too much money without doing their due diligence or is it that the economy has scared off even the most veteran domainers from actively trading?

What are your thoughts?

I'd say option A. Like a lot of businesses people get involved thinking it will be easy money and when its not, they give up. Often times as well people just don't stay active on the forums despite the continued involvement in the business.

Remember the old alchemist's saying, "you need gold to make gold". There are plenty of opportunities to acquire domains at decent prices and resell or develop them.

I still have, and use, my first 5 domains.

But I agree with the consensus - a lot of people get into it thinking they'll make tons of money hand regging domains (who didn't?). Many give up early - others learn and expand.

I'm a domain owner, yes. From the beginning all domains I bought were intended for own development - business ideas I had, and in some cases realized. Others ended up dormant, if I never found time for that specific project, or didn't find it worthwhile. Sometimes I dropped those domains, not even thinking about that there was an aftermarket for domains. I didn't realize that until a few years ago... even though I sold my first domain, (which even WAS my first domain), already 1999.
Thinking back, I'm rather sorry I dropped some of them. Or didn't register others that I thought about at that time. But it's STILL so that I hardly ever sell a domain... I develop them, or sit on them until an end user with big pockets shows up. Flipping domains for peanuts isn't for me, and generally ignore any offers from resellers to buy domains I own.
I really think that I'm more of an end user myself than a domainer, even though I've bought quite a few domains for speculation, not really having an end user idea for them, but that tends to change from time to time, when I come up with ideas for domains that I had no inkling about when I first bought the domain.
Counting one way, I've been domaining for 14 years. That's when I started registering domains. But I didn't realize the value of domains as an asset in themselves until perhaps 5 years ago... but still, I see domains more as a mid-term investment, not as a day-to-day living.
So to count an average on how long people stick with domaining, one first have to define clearly what domaining and a domainer really is.

Ouch! Clearly some need more time on the forums. However, they can also be a time burner if you're focused on development (many are currently spun off on this track). And no doubt there are plenty who come and go.

Agreed. I regged some crap in my old learning days but this is something else ... WTF !

Recession. That's probably the main culprit. A lot of names you could sell for $50+ on a forum a year or so ago won't even fetch a $1 now.
Just like the stock market, this is where the wannabes get flushed out. I bet many names are dropping now that were meant to be a long term hold.
